What is the difference between physical sex and spiritual sex? Sex, by its very nature, is a physical experience. We touch, feel, move, breathe, get aroused, and feel pleasure through our bodies. But our sexual experiences are not limited to what the physical body can experience.
Sex can also become an experience of connection, presence, energy, vulnerability, meaning, and even a way to connect with the Divine. When we approach sexuality with intention and curiosity, instead of as a physical act, sex can become a sacred, spiritual experience. But what does spiritual sex really mean?
What Is Spiritual Sex?
Many of us were taught that sex was sin or that only certain constructs of sexuality could be spiritual, for example, sex between a husband and wife. Spiritual sex recognizes that sex can be a spiritual practice, a way to bring us closer to the Divine, rather than separating us from it.
To have a spiritual sexual experience, you must first see sexuality as sacred, special, and divine, not something you rush through or do without intention. Spiritual sex is a deeper, more intentional experience.
This type of spiritual connection can be a way for both partners to exchange energy with each other and the energy of the universe. Instead of placing our attention on what the body is doing, or concentrating on specific parts of our body, spiritual sex is about being fully present and aware of what we are feeling moment by moment.
Spiritual sex is about meaning and intention, but the intention is not to reach an outcome or have a better orgasm; it’s to connect with your partner spiritually and energetically.
It’s about noticing the connection with your partner. Being aware of your senses, the way your partner’s skin feels, the way they smell, the temperature of their breath on your skin, or the sensations you feel in your body with their touch.
Spiritual sex is not tied to a particular religious practice or tradition, although some belief systems are more aligned with it. There are no doctrines or rules you need to follow to make spirituality part of your sexual experience.
Spiritual sex can begin with something as simple as bringing sacred intention, curiosity, and mindfulness into sex. When you begin to focus on what you are feeling, instead of what you are doing, your experience of sex may naturally become more intentional. You may notice every breath, every touch, and which parts of your body feel energized, calmer, or connected.
Spiritual sex can be a part of sacred sexuality, which is a more spiritual approach to sexuality. Sacred sexuality sees sexuality as a meaningful and sacred part of ourselves rather than something separate from our spiritual lives.
But spiritual sex is not about transcending the physical body or disconnecting from it. It’s about understanding that the body can become the pathway through which we experience something sacred.

Physical Sex vs. Spiritual Sex: What’s the Difference?
There is nothing inherently wrong with sex that is purely physical. Sex can be passionate, exciting, or emotional. It can satisfy desire, create physical pleasure, release tension, or just feel really good. Not every sexual experience has to be a profound spiritual experience.
Spiritual sex doesn’t mean you have to stop enjoying sex, feeling turned on, or having orgasms. It can become quite the opposite. Spiritual sex connects us to the divine, and many experience more pleasure and bliss. It’s just not the goal.
Although physical sex and spiritual sex both involve the body and are both a physical act, the way we experience it is different. The distinction is that one is focused on physical arousal, pleasure or reaching orgasm, and the other is focused on connection, curiosity, presence, and reverence.
Your First Sacred Relationship is With the Self
Most people think about sex as something that happens between two partners, but spiritual sex doesn’t require another person. Spiritual sex can begin with your relationship with yourself.
Solo sexuality gives us an opportunity to explore sacred sex without needing a partner. It doesn’t require pleasing, responding to, or reciprocating another person’s needs or desires. It’s a way to create space for the sacred, holy, and divine to connect with the Self.
Solo sex is as spiritual as partner sex, and is a way to connect more deeply with yourself, the Divine, your higher power, the Universe — or God.
It’s a form of worship between you and the Divine. When approached with presence and intention, solo sexual experiences can become their own form of spiritual practice.
To begin experiencing sexuality as a spiritual practice, we must first see sexuality differently – not as something separate from our spirituality, but as something worthy of reverence. When we see sexuality, pleasure, and the body as sacred, solo sex can become an opportunity to connect more deeply with the Self and the Divine within us.
This might begin with a simple practice of looking at yourself in a mirror. Spend a few minutes gazing into your own eyes, connecting with yourself, before slowly starting to explore touch. There is no goal or hurry. We can slow down, become fully present, and allow ourselves to experience touch, sensation, warmth, or energy without trying to “accomplish” anything.
This might begin with a simple practice of looking at yourself in a mirror. Spend a few minutes gazing into your own eyes, connecting with yourself, before slowly starting to explore touch. Rather than touching your body simply to have an orgasm, this is a time to honor your body. There is no goal or hurry.
Starting with the outer parts of your body, notice sensation without rushing to touch a specific part of your body. Allow yourself to play, explore, and become curious.
There is no perfect way to explore your sacredness. There is no required goal or outcome. The practice is about beginning to experience the Self, the body, and sexual pleasure as sacred.

Spiritual Sex With a Partner
Spiritual sex with a partner recognizes that the sacred exists not only within ourselves, but within the person sharing the experience with us. Our partner isn’t just another body giving or receiving pleasure. We can approach them with reverence for their body, their energy, and the Divine that exists within them.
Physical sex with a partner is often focused on performance. What would turn my partner on? Can we be done already? Am I going to orgasm? Are they? When it comes to sex with a partner, we can be so focused on performance that we forget to notice connection, intention, touch, and the energy being shared.
Spiritual sex with a partner can become an opportunity to practice vulnerability, communication, trust, receiving, giving, and deep attention. Instead of approaching sex as something we do for one another, we begin experiencing it as something we create together.
It means slowing down and becoming consciously aware of each other, allowing touch, breath, pleasure, emotion, and sexual energy to become part of our connection.
Eye gazing can be done with a partner as well. It is one simple way to begin exploring spiritual sex. Sit across from your partner and spend a few minutes simply looking into one another’s eyes. Become present with the person in front of you before moving into touch.
When you do begin touching, slow down. Give yourself time to appreciate your partner’s body rather than rushing toward the parts of the body we typically associate with sex.
This kind of sacred connection creates space for vulnerability, trust, giving, receiving, and play. It doesn’t mean sex needs to become serious or solemn. Spiritual sex can still be passionate, joyful, and playful.
The difference is the intention we bring into the experience. Rather than simply doing something to one another, we can experience pleasure together while recognizing the sacred within ourselves, within our partner, and within the sexual energy we share.

How Sacred Sexuality Changes Our Relationship With Pleasure
Many of us have inherited spiritual and cultural beliefs that separate sexuality from the sacred. Pleasure may be treated as selfish, shameful, or sinful.
What if pleasure itself can be part of our relationship with the Divine?
When we experience sexuality as sacred, pleasure no longer needs to exist separately from our spiritual lives. It can become a way of connecting more deeply with the sacred that exists within ourselves and within the world around us.
This is part of the medicine of Shakti.
Shakti is the Divine Feminine energy, the creative life force that moves through all existence. She is not separate from the body or from our human experience. Shakti is movement, creation, sensuality, desire, transformation, and life itself.
This is a very different relationship with spirituality than many of us were taught. Our bodies and pleasure are not obstacles to our spiritual life. They are part of how we experience the sacred and can be part of how we worship the Divine.
How to Begin Exploring Spiritual Sex
There is no single correct way to practice spiritual sex. What matters is how you enter the experience.
Begin with sacred intention. Before touching yourself or a partner, take a moment to acknowledge that you are entering a sacred experience. This might mean connecting with God, the Divine, the Universe, Shakti, your own spirit, or whatever represents the sacred within your spiritual beliefs.
Slow down. Spiritual sex is not about racing toward orgasm or accomplishing a particular sexual goal. Give yourself time to experience your body, pleasure, and sexual energy without needing the experience to go anywhere.
Become fully present. Notice your breath. Feel the sensations within your body. Pay attention to touch, sound, scent, movement, temperature, emotion, and energy. Allow your senses to become part of the experience rather than disappearing into thoughts about what should happen next.
Approach the body with reverence. Whether you are touching your own body or a partner’s, notice what changes when you approach the body as something sacred rather than simply sexual. Slow touch can become an act of appreciation, connection, and even devotion.
Let pleasure move through the body. If you begin to feel sexual energy, become curious about it. Instead of focusing all of your attention on one part of the body, imagine that energy moving through other parts of your body. Notice what happens when you allow pleasure to expand rather than immediately seeking release.
Enter without expectations. Instead of approaching spiritual sexuality with anticipation or expectations, enter with curiosity. Orgasm can absolutely be part of a spiritual sexual experience, but spiritual sex isn’t about an outcome. There is no finish line you have to reach for the experience to be meaningful and sacred.
Allow yourself to play. Sacred does not have to mean serious. Explore. Experiment. Be playful. Be curious. Pleasure and play do not diminish the sacredness of the experience.
Most importantly, spiritual sex isn’t something you need to perform correctly. It begins with a willingness to experience sexuality differently: with sacred intention, reverence for the body, presence with pleasure, and openness to the Divine.
